Pope Benedict XVI – Coat of Arms

For over 800 years, it has been a tradition for the Pope to pick his own personal coat of arms, also called a shield. These symbols show the beliefs and values that are most important to each Pope. Pope Benedict XVI’s shield is in the shape of a chalice and has these symbols:

A Shell – In the center of the shield is a large gold scallop shell, a sign of our being pilgrims, of being on a journey. One of the rolls of the Pope is to be a pilgrim, going out to visit people of many nations.

Moor of Freising – The upper left-hand corner of the shield shows a brown-faced Moor with a red crown and collar. This symbolized that the Church is universal and welcomes all who wish to worship-regardless of race or class.

Check next week’s bulletin for
the meaning of the Bear, Papal Keys, and Miter.

Our RCIA Program is thriving and bringing people into our parish family thanks to the efforts of Margie, our Christian Formation Director, and her team, and the prior efforts of Madeleine Conway. For many years, Madeleine planned, facilitated, coordinated and developed the RCIA program. She started the foundation that we have been able to build upon. Thank you Madeleine for your many years as a volunteer at St. Jerome.
